Monday, Jan. 12, was the first day of the second session in the 91st General Assembly.
Looking ahead, we are looking a little different. New members, new leadership, new positions.
I am no exception to those changes. I was named the Chair of the House Transportation Committee. I am excited for the new role, new challenges, new policy and getting a different view of transportation policy.
This field is not new, however. When I chaired the Administrative Rules Review Committee, I got to know the Department of Transportation very well. I look forward to working with them again and our shared values of making Iowans lives better through transportation.
There will be many more issues running across the desk this session besides transportation policy and I want to hear from you. We’re hearing a lot about property taxes, crime, cancer, clean water, human trafficking, energy, and property rights — just to mention a few.
The legislative website https://www.legis.iowa.gov/ is a great resource for information, but feel free to ask if you have a question about a bill’s progress, when meetings are happening, or about the general process. I am here to help.
As always, you own the Capitol building. Come visit! It is always so wonderful to see people from back home. I am usually only in Des Moines four days a week — but I sure do miss you all when I am there!
But every single day is an honor and a privilege and that is not lost on me. Walking up the Capitol steps every day is a humbling reminder.
Thank you for trusting me with your representation in Des Moines.
The first Legislative Forum will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7, from 10-11 a.m. at King’s Pointe Resort in Storm Lake.
