Thrills on tap at BV County Fair: Carnival returns after hiatus

Fair runs July 9-13 in Alta

Posted

The Buena Vista County Fair returns to Alta July 9-13. This year, Scott Amusements brings carnival rides back to the midway — something not seen at the 2024 fair, which featured only inflatables.

The fair opens Wednesday, July 9, with free gate admission that day (grandstand not included). The day’s events feature the pet, dog, and horse shows, followed by the crowning of the 2025 Fair Queen, King, Little Miss, and Mister at 6 p.m. Trent Chinn Promotions stock car races will begin at 6:45 p.m.

The carnival opens Thursday evening and runs through Sunday.

Area 4-H and Clover Kids will take over the BV County barns and show rings all week, showcasing livestock and competing in judging contests — from goats and rabbits to swine, and maybe even a few alpacas. Fairgoers can also enjoy special events like Critter Close Ups animal encounters, face painting, balloon art by Professor Von Air, and the Meyer Petting Zoo, which will keep younger visitors entertained throughout the weekend.

As always, the Open Class Building will be packed with homemade pies, hand-stitched quilts and plenty of other show-quality entries.

The midway comes alive Thursday night, July 10, when Scott Amusements rolls in with rides for thrill seekers of all ages. The carnival runs nightly through Sunday, and advance discount tickets are available at local banks and businesses.

When the sun goes down, the stage lights up

Friday night kicks off with motocross mayhem at 6:30 p.m., followed by country artist Sequoia Newland.

Saturday night delivers the ever-popular Demo Derby at 6 p.m., followed by Cory Waller & the Wicked Things rocking the UBI/Tyson Fresh Meats/Bomgaars stage.

Sunday funday with some family favorites

The fair wraps up with a laid-back but activity-packed Sunday, July 13. Start with a community church service, catch the Dog Agility Show, and sample smoky goodness at the Tyson-sponsored BBQ contest. Kids can enjoy foam parties, barrel train rides, balloon shows and hands-on exhibits all day long.

  • Wednesday: Free gate admission (grandstand races extra)
  • Thursday–Saturday: $5 before noon; $10 after noon (includes all shows and grandstand events)
