Storm Lakers shine at WISE show

Tejeda wins Best of Show

Saturday’s opening reception of Buena Vista University’s 16th annual Western Iowa Salon Exhibit showcased the artwork of high school students from Carroll High School, Hawley High School, Sibley-Ocheyedan High School, Sioux Center High School, South Central Calhoun High School, Westwood Community High School and Storm Lake High School.

High schoolers from Storm Lake excelled, winning six of 11 awards presentd. Miriam Tejeda’s “Unresolved” earned Best of Show and Ryker Doebel’s “Freaky Wire Guy” took third place. Briana Monzon Benavides’ “Cubita Cup” and Wester Xiong’s “Death Playing the Fiddle” were awarded Honorable Mentions. Juror’s Mentions went to Jacqueline Hernandez’s “Army Dreamer” and Crishawn Falcam’s “Bouncing Baller.”

  • “Self Defense” photography by Connor Riner
  • “Silent Scare of a Sunless Situation” photography by Alan Bermudez

The exhibit remains on display at BVU Art Gallery through March 8.
