Rod was born Dec. 11, 1947, to Charles and Mary Alice (Raveling) Plagman in Cherokee. He graduated in 1966 from Sioux Valley School in Linn Grove. Rod went on to attend Iowa State University, graduating with an ag business degree in 1970. He served in the Army National Guard from 1968 until 1975 as an officer in the Webster City unit.
On Aug. 24, 1974, Rod was united in marriage to Charlene Suntken in Belmond. They were blessed with two sons, Jeremy and Jason. In 1998, the family moved from their acreage in Schaller to Storm Lake. Together, Rod and Charlene built a life rooted in faith, family, community and hard work.
Rod worked in banking, farm management and real estate appraising until his retirement in 2012. Rod was a devoted member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake where he served as an elder. He was also a member of the Serpaci Car Club where he served as president and treasurer. Rod enjoyed volunteering his delivery services for Meals on Wheels and Friends with Food. He made a positive impact on the lives of many young men and women while volunteering as a 4-H leader in Sac County.
In his free time, Rod enjoyed tending to his garden and going fishing. He made many memories while traveling to all 50 states, Europe and Mexico. Rod’s servant heart led him to serve on mission trips to Guatemala and New Orleans. In the summer months, you could find Rod attending his grandchildren’s soccer games and driving his pontoon around Storm Lake. He found joy in woodworking and exploring bike trails with friends. More than anything, Rod treasured time with his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Left to cherish Rod’s memory include his beloved wife Charlene Plagman of Storm Lake; children: Jeremy (Erica) Plagman and sons, Cooper and Bryce, of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; Jason (Megan) Plagman and son Miles of Brentwood, Tenn.; brother Randy (Nancy) Plagman of Sheldon; sisters: Annetta (Charlie) Coleman of Suches, Ga.; MaryBeth Rozmus of Riverside; many siblings-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Welcoming him into heaven are his parents, Charles and Mary Alice Plagman; sister Claudia Perkins; brother-in-law Dick Perkins; and parents-in-law, Fred and Lorene Suntken.
Rod’s legacy of love, laughter and dedication to family and community will live on in all who knew him.
