Richard Andrews

Richard Lee Andrews “Dick,” 79, of Sun City, Ariz., died Oct. 28, 2024, surrounded by his family.

Richard was born in McCook, Neb., to Wanda and Herb Andrews on June 29, 1945. After attending Storm Lake High School, where he set a hurdling record that stood for decades, he graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in aerospace engineering. 

After graduation, he was interviewed by Hyman G. Rickover and was accepted into the Navy Nuclear Program. Lieutenant Andrews completed Naval Nuclear Power School, and on Aug. 8, 1968, was assigned to the Engineering Department aboard the USS Long Beach, the world’s first nuclear-powered surface ship. 

After serving three tours of combat at sea during the Vietnam War, Engineering Officer of the Watch Andrews was honorably discharged from the Navy.  Richard accepted a position at Omaha Public Power District in Omaha, Neb., where he assisted with construction and start up of Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station. 

During his over 33-year career at OPPD, Richard served as Fort Calhoun’s plant manager, head of Nuclear Production and Division Manager of Nuclear Services.  After retirement, Richard moved to Arizona, where he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Richard was preceded in death by parents, Herb and Wanda Andrews; grandparents, Glen and Ruby Cass; and William and Irene Andrews. 

He is survived by wife Sue (Renshaw) Andrews; children, Ross Andrews and Rich Andrews; sister Barb Konradi; brother Dan Andrews; daughters-in-law, Cassandre Andrews and Jennie Andrews; stepchildren: Rick Schumann, Amy Miller, Jody Foxx and Mike McLean; grandchildren: Ryan Andrews, Joshua Andrews and Sara Andrews; and step grandchildren: Ricky Schumann, Macy Joint, Lauryn Schumann, Stephen Schumann, Daulton Foxx, Tanner Foxx, Kylee Cain, C.J. Miller, Kaden Miller, Sean Shute, Morgan McLean and Jake McLean.

Interment will be at National Memorial Cemetery of Phoenix, Ariz., at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 22, followed by a celebration of life at North Hills Church of God in Phoenix at 11 a.m.
