Phyllis Anne Haakinson, 84, of Wilson, N.C., passed away Thursday, Nov. 7, 2024.
A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Therese Catholic Church, 700 Nash St. N, Wilson, N.C. Father Fernando Torres will officiate.
A Rosary service will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, officiated by Deacon Michael DuSablon and is open to family and friends. It will be followed immediately by a visitation from 6:30-8 p.m. at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson, N.C.
Phyllis was dedicated to her family and a faithful servant of St. Therese Catholic Church. She enjoyed traveling, puzzles, bird watching, planting gardens and she made the best chocolate chip cookies.
David and Phyllis were high school sweethearts and were married for 65 years. Their love took them on many adventures across many states.
Phyllis worked at various jobs ranging from school cafeteria worker to secretary of St. Therese, but her most loved job was being a mom to her seven children. She was dearly loved by her family, church and her friends, she will be greatly missed and thought of often with wonderful memories.
Phyllis is survived by her loving husband David B. Haakinson; sons: David E. Haakinson and wife Debbie; Gregory J. Haakinson and wife JoAnna; and Christopher D. Haakinson and wife Lisa; daughters: Susanne L. Lawless and husband John; Carole M. Ayers and husband Steven; and Natalie A. Mercer and husband Matthew; grandchildren: D.J. Haakinson and wife Jessica; Matthew Haakinson; Jared Smith and partner Sam; Dannie Haakinson; Bradley Ayers and wife Kayla; Travis Ayers and partner Rosa; Josephine Ayers and fiancé Tannie; Shannon Lawless; Megan Westbrook and husband Spencer; Robin Anne Mercer; and great-grandchildren: Logan, Cameron and Kenzie Haakinson; Beatrix Herek Smith; and Nicolas Ayers.
She was preceded in death by her son Gerald “Jerry” Haakinson; parents, Thomas “Bud” Schuler and Lena Flora Schuler; stepmother Jessie Schuler; and her brothers: Ronald Schuler, Kenneth Schuler and Frederick Schuler.
