Newell will host its annual Watermelon Days festivities Aug. 6-9. The community scavenger hunt returns this year and the committee has also planned two nights of live music on Main Street. The Newell Public Library and Newell Historical Society will both hold open houses on Saturday. Most events will be held in downtown Newell unless otherwise noted. Drive-in movie night at the Newell Golf Course at 8:45 p.m.
The Newell Fire Department Meal and Watermelon Feed will be held outside the Allee Building starting at 5 p.m. Featuring family games and activities. The beer garden opens at 5 p.m. with free admission until 8:30 p.m. The Little Miss and Mister Newell presentation, community awards and special community recognition is at 6:30 p.m. Kids water fights on the south block of Main Street will follow awards along with family games and activities. Live music by Heritage from 9-11 p.m. Admission is $10 and the show is for ages 18 and up.
A community scavenger hunt begins at 9 a.m. Clue sheets available at the Watermelon Days info booth. Winner will be drawn Sunday with other prize drawings. A craft and vendor fair will run from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the upstairs of the Allee Building. The community parade begins at 10:30 a.m., line-up at 10 a.m. on East Jensen Street. Food trucks will be available throughout the day with lunch and supper available. Outdoor Kids Zone is $5 and admission includes inflatables, prize games, bags boards and other games. Newell Public Library will hold a new children’s books open house from 12-3 p.m. Redneck Relays is at 1 p.m. Allee Mansion Tours run from 1-4 p.m. The beer garden opens at 2 p.m., free admission until 9 p.m. Bags tournament starts at 2 p.m., registration is $20. Indoor Kids Zone from 2-5 p.m. for a free-will donation, features face painting, quiet movie area, library craft and story time, indoor games. The Historic Newell Cemetery Walk is at 4:30 p.m. Glow foam party from 8-9 p.m., $5 admission. Beer garden and DJ Cody Hogrefe from 9 p.m.-1 a.m. Admission is $10 and is for ages 18 and up.
The 5K Fun Run/Walk will be held at 7 a.m. at Newell City Park. A free-will donation community breakfast will be held at the Allee Building from 8-11 a.m. A car and bike show will be held on Fulton Street from 8 a.m.-noon. Opens to the public at 9 a.m. with awards and drawings held at noon. A community church service will be held at 10 a.m. in the lot north of the Allee Building. Bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the food pantry and bring a lawn chair.
