The Witter Gallery will present a special exhibition from July 7-31 featuring selections from the personal art collection of Judy Quick and Jim Spooner, a couple whose shared appreciation for creativity, craftsmanship and storytelling has led them to assemble an eclectic and deeply personal collection over many years.
Rather than focusing on a single style or medium, Quick and Spooner’s collection reflects their curiosity and joy in discovering unique works by artists whose pieces spark conversation, humor, and wonder. Their collection celebrates the imagination and individuality of folk artists, regional craftsmen and makers whose work captures both technical skill and playful spirit.
Among the featured works is a whimsical wooden sculpture by New Mexico folk artist Leroy Ramon Archuleta (1949–2002) of Tesuque, N.M. Archuleta, the son of noted woodcarver Felipe Archuleta, began carving at a young age while helping his father fill commissions. He went on to develop his own distinctive voice as a folk artist, creating colorful, imaginative animal carvings that earned widespread admiration. His work was featured in the 1997 publication Leroys Zoo.
The exhibition includes Archuleta’s unforgettable Rainbow Trout with Bear, a vividly painted rainbow-striped trout swallowing a bear — a sculpture that perfectly captures the artist's playful sense of humor and inventive storytelling. The piece invites viewers to pause, smile and appreciate the unexpected.
“One of the joys of collecting is finding art that continues to surprise you every time you see it,” said the collectors. “These are pieces that have brought us years of enjoyment, and we’re excited to share them with the community.”
Visitors to the exhibition will discover a diverse assortment of works that reflect Quick and Spooner’s passion for collecting art that is both visually engaging and rich in personality. Each piece tells a story — not only about its maker but also about the journeys, friendships, and experiences that brought it into their collection.
The exhibition offers an opportunity to explore the world through the eyes of dedicated collectors who value originality, craftsmanship, and the delight of the unexpected.
The exhibition will be on view at the Witter Gallery from July 7-31 and have a reception on Tuesday, July 14 at 5 p.m. Community members are invited to experience this unique collection and enjoy the creativity, humor and artistry that Judy Quick and Jim Spooner have gathered over a lifetime of collecting.
