Deb Mortensen, best selling author and retired teacher with the Storm Lake Community Schools, has written her third children’s book of the I Can Be Responsible series, called “Not Now!” Her first book, “Not Me!” was published in 2024 and her second book, “Not Mine!” in 2025. Both books were awarded the Mom’s Choice award and the Golden Wizard Book Prize.
Bobby has a special day planned on his farm. His friends from B.A. Friend Elementary are coming to visit. Bobby can’t wait to show them the animals and tractors, but when plans keep changing, he wonders how to keep everyone happy. Bobby discovers how being patient, flexible and kind turns a busy day into a perfect adventure. Not Now thinks he is “helping” Bobby, but is he?
“Not Now,” written by Mortensen and illustrated by Carissa Harris, reminds all of us to be patient with others and that sometimes your day doesn’t go as planned. It is a reminder to treat everyone with kindness. The book is intended for ages 4-8, but readers of all ages will relate to the characters and situations Bobby finds himself in.
“I am proud to be a children’s author,” says Mrs. Mortensen. “‘Thank you to all who have supported me on this journey. I hope “Not Now” can teach the reader the value of being patient and flexible. Illustrator Carissa Harris did a wonderful job making my words come to life in a humorous way.”
All three books, “Not Me,” “Not Mine” and “Not Now” were published through Miriam Laundry Publishing and are available through Amazon in hardcover, softcover and eBook.
Mortensen also has copies for sale. She loves doing school and library visits where she can read her books and share her author journey. Look for her on social media @ Deb Mortensen Books on Facebook and Instagram. Her website is www.debmortensenbooks.com.
