Michael P. Brecher, 85, of Storm Lake passed away peacefully on July 11, 2026, at Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Funeral services will take place Monday, July 20, at 10:30 a.m. at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Private burial will be in Storm Lake Cemetery at a later time. Visitation will be held from 10-10:30 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mike’s honor may be directed to the Lake Preservation Association of Storm Lake.

Mike was born Oct. 19, 1940, and was adopted at birth by Dr. Paul and Marie Brecher of Storm Lake. Growing up in the community, Mike fell in love with the lake and surrounding habitat. As a youth, he spent much of his free time hunting, fishing and exploring the areas around the lake. These outdoor activities instilled in him his lifelong interests of science, conservation and the environment.

He graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1959 and later graduated from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake with an emphasis in science and biology.

Mike served in the United States Army where he was assigned to the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Following his honorable discharge, he accepted a position at American Cyanamid as a pharmaceutical pathologist. Later, Mike was promoted to the role of lead archivist in the pathology department, holding that position until his retirement in 1996.

After his retirement, Mike returned to Storm Lake, becoming a strong advocate for the lake. He supported local and national conservation organizations, including Ducks Unlimited, the Izaak Walton League, Pheasants Forever, NRA and the LPA in Storm Lake. He also worked closely as a volunteer with the IDNR, contributing a great amount of time and energy over many years collecting daily readings of the clarity, quality and depth of the lake in Storm Lake. Mike coordinated his data with Julie Sievers, an IDNR Environmental Specialist. He felt a great sense of pride in contributing to the lake’s improvements.

In Mike’s spare time, he enjoyed Storm Lake High School and Buena Vista University sporting events. He was often seen driving his little red Ford Festiva surveying the lake. These outings almost always concluded with a stop at Hardee’s to visit with friends.

Mike entered the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in the fall of 2025. He settled into a comfortable lifestyle and enjoyed his time there. He truly appreciated the kind staff, good food and watching his beloved lake from the sunroom.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Paul and Marie Brecher, and his stepmother, Dr. Audrey Brecher.

Mike is survived by his sister Becki (Layton) Zylstra of Storm Lake; nephews: Matthew (Brittney) Zylstra of St. Louis, Mo.; and Dr. Tyler (Ashley) Zylstra of Marion; great-nieces and nephews: Sophie and Aidan Zylstra; and Zoey, Zach and Zeke Zylstra.
