Letters to the Editor: Misleading radio ad

Posted

The radio spot on KAYL that opposed the Sac County Jail Bond said it was paid for and sponsored by the Concerned Citizens of Sac County. That is NOT the group that meets at the Sac Library twice a month.

KAYL will not disclose who paid for the two day advertisement, but it was not the non-partisan group of Sac County residents who meet to support and discuss peaceful actions to achieve positive outcomes for the common good.

We are ashamed that someone would take our name and use it for such a purpose without the group’s consent.

Agree on marina

We read the full-page ad from our colleagues at Hamilton Law Firm, which urged for the marina building to be used as a bar and restaurant with live entertainment.  We agree.

A message from the Farmers’ Market

The 2025 Storm Lake Farmers Market vendors thank you, the customers, for your steadfast support in allowing us to do what we do best by bringing fresh, locally grown vegetables, baked goods, honey, farm fresh eggs, fresh squeezed lemonade, jewelry, crocheted items and 3D designed items to the market each Thursday and Saturday. It was another great season!

Thank you to Storm Lake United and the City of Storm Lake for their support in granting us a permit to use Parking Lot C during our market times. Thank you to the area businesses and residents whose parking was limited on Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings.

Thank you to Dana Larsen for his weekly reminders about the market on the City of Storm Lake Facebook page and for his photo/video collages of our small heartbeat in Storm Lake.  Thank you also to the Storm Lake Times Pilot for their coverage, weekly calendar and additional articles highlighting some of the vendors. A special thank you to Joe Cullen for sharing his musical talents with us.

Please know that we pride ourselves in knowing that all our produce is grown locally.  Gardening is a busy and time consuming talent. Everything we sell is grown or made through hard work, from the vegetables to baked goods, local honey and farm fresh eggs, as well as those cute little 3D animals.

It's time to dig the rest of the potatoes and gather up the squash and pumpkins.  It's time to put the gardens to rest and plan for the 2026 market season. Please visit us in the summer of 2026.  We will be anxious to see your smiling faces and hear what you did all winter.

Will Iowa’s Republicans ever stand up to Trump?

As a follow-up to last month’s No Kings protests, I attended a Nov. 5 meeting with Joni Ernst’s regional director here in Iowa. We discussed the government shutdown and its impact on families who could lose their Medicaid or ACA coverage and become uninsured. Congress should extend the ACA tax credits to keep health insurance relatively affordable for tens of thousands of Iowans.

We also discussed Donald Trump and how he governs. People are angry for lots of reasons. Trump is destroying our democracy, the rule of law and our system of government.  He’s using government agencies to target his rivals and centralize power so he can call all of the shots, which is what tyrants do.

We said Trump is a bully, and then asked the aide: When is Joni Ernst going to stand up to Trump and challenge his excesses? We didn’t get a straight answer, so we’ll keep posing that question, not only to Ernst but all of our congressional Republicans. This isn’t a time for cowardice.

If the recent election results are an indication of things to come, it seems the chickens will come home to roost in about a year.

Face up or get gone

Ever hear thieves in the night? Why night?  Well, if you're not seen it's easier to get away with it.  When people want closed meetings all it does is sow mistrust. And invitation only just means to me co-conspirators. Do they think people will get less angry. Myself it just makes me more determined to bring the light. Some flowers bloom in the sun and close at night.  Which looks better? If they don't have answers to problems then listen to others. Ever hear two heads are better than one? When they get so entrenched all I can think is someone’s being paid to think that way.  When they can’t give a rational reason for doing things it's time to get rid of them.

Food insecurity

We have a nutritional crisis in our country; for many Americans, “food insecurity” is defined as  “when is our next 1,200 calorie meal?”

Obesity in adults, according to National Center for Health Statistics, states that 40% of adults are obese, with 10% having severe obesity.  One in five children are obese.

The incidence is higher in the Black  and Hispanic populations. The SNAP recipients have a higher incidence of obesity than the general population.

The health impacts are severe, with the incidence of childhood diabetes skyrocketing.

For adults, mobility problems, higher probabilities of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, arthritis and some cancers.

Mafia way of life

Journalists are reporting almost a daily body count taken by President Trump out of the skins of our Caribbean neighbors.

In doing this, we are mimicking the relentlessly cruel Israeli daily body count of their neighbors we have seen in Gaza for the past two years.

This is how Christians and Jews love their neighbors?

Have you noticed? Not just far-right leaders in Israel and America, but their disciples in the Knesset and Congress are all good actors.

I’m thinking of Senate Majority Leader John Thune in his fiery finger pointing at those lurid Democrats responsible for all the evil of the current government shutdown.

The propaganda leader himself, President Trump, uses whatever lever of fantasy or intimidation he can grab hold of, like his recent threat to begin nuclear testing once again.

He also threatens to withhold federal money due to a city or a state if the people or politicians of that jurisdiction don’t do what he tells them to do.

This is both the Mafia way of life and the Communist way of doing business. If naked force is so effective, why doesn’t everyone just get on board with it?
