Letters to the Editor: Learning in Rooted

Posted

My name is Bryce Hogrefe, and I am in the second period Rooted class at Storm Lake High School.  Plants are the milestone of Storm Lake and many places like Storm Lake. Not only do plants give us food, they also give us oxygen. Every food web begins with plants at some point.

Plants like corn, also known as Zea mays, feed animals like pigs and cows.  Plants also remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere which slows down climate change with that carbon dioxide plants produce oxygen so we can breathe.

We recently visited the Heritage Tree Museum where we learned about the different leaves on the trees and the different shapes and characteristics of leaves. We learned about the apple tree also known as the Malus domestica. We learned that apples start as a flower and that flower has to be pollinated in order to turn into an apple.  We were able to go and take notes on different trees and draw those trees’ specific leaf characteristics. Those were just some of the amazing things we were able to do in that class and I loved every part of it. Thank you so much for reading.

Blue Tsu Go!

The end to the government shutdown went about like I thought it would. A few Democrats and Independent Angus King from Maine voted with the Rethuglicans who don’t care if you lose your healthcare and are in pain. They don’t care if you’re starving as long as they have MONEY and POWER. Maybe if there were more Independents we wouldn't have such gridlock. God forbid we have free thinkers not tied to a party. As long as voters allow themselves to be bought and manipulated by gerrymandering this is what you’re going to get. Democrats voted to open because they have empathy and care about the people.

When are voters going to WAKE UP and vote for someone who cares for them more than money? In 2022 Rethuglicans called for a red wave which turned out to be what Stephen Colbert called a pink trickle. Let’s show them a real wave —Blue Tsunami. Blue Tsu Go!
