Letter to the Editor: Praising the Times Pilot

Posted

Time for me to heap some praise on the Storm Lake Times Pilot to express my appreciation for a very high quality newspaper.

The reporting achieves high journalistic standards, unlike so much of the superficial reporting that occurs so frequently these days. Reporters dig into topics extensively. Interviews go into depth and we hear from the major players and then some.  And the issues don’t stay on the back burner. As situations change, they are brought back, reminding us of how consequential they are. And the articles are actually interesting to read, long as they frequently are.

The community and the people living there are important to the Times Pilot.

The people. Those who hold power positions and more ordinary people.  All are important. I love the Favorite Recipes section. Not so much for the recipes, but to learn about the people who make up the fabric of the community. And the celebrations, and the activities and the school events and the music in town. The coverage of those points to a vibrant community, made more so by knowing all that is happening.

To continue with my gushing. Rick Wimer. What a writer. Who would think that an article about dredging the lake could be so engrossing, so very entertaining.  I read every word and understood vividly what it was like to work on the dredge. Well, much as I could without actually being there.  (May 20, 2025).

Lastly, for a person who is not a sports enthusiast, every week I look at the sports photos and marvel at the capture of the action shots. The facial expressions, the hands in the air, the travelling ball, the intersections of bodies. Masterpieces, Jamie Knapp!
