The City of Storm Lake has been informed of a substantial donation from the John Black Trust, designated for use with the library and the parks system.
“We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude and appreciation for this donation, which will be put to good use providing additional projects or services for the community,” Mayor Mike Porsch said in announcing the donation.
Mr. Black grew up in Storm Lake and graduated from the Storm Lake Schools. After graduating, he earned a law degree from Drake University and went on to practice law in the Des Moines metro area. His mother continued to reside in Storm Lake until her death. In retirement, Mr. Black enjoyed traveling, and lived in several different regions of the country for a time, and supported numerous charitable efforts.
Storm Lake remained important to Mr. Black throughout his life. He was proud to call this his hometown, and looked forward to an opportunity to give back to the community where he was raised. The choice of trust funding was made from his belief that “children need a place to read, and a place to play.”
His estate has also made charitable contributions to local schools and a local church. Mr. Black passed away earlier this year at age 81.
