join for pancakes, hot air balloon rides and car show

The Cherokee Airport will be buzzing before sunrise on Sunday, May 31, as volunteers, pilots and early‑rising families gather for the community’s Annual Flight Breakfast, a tradition that blends aviation, classic cars and small‑town hospitality.

The event runs from 7 a.m. to noon, offering visitors a full breakfast of pancakes, sausage and eggs served by longtime volunteers who help anchor the morning’s steady flow of guests. Organizers say the breakfast remains the heart of the event, but the growing list of activities has helped turn it into one of Cherokee’s most anticipated early‑summer gatherings.

Tethered hot‑air balloon rides will be available throughout the morning, weather permitting, giving attendees a chance to rise above the airport grounds for a brief but memorable view of the surrounding countryside. On the tarmac, a show‑and‑shine car show will feature polished classics, restored trucks and custom builds, drawing both local owners and regional enthusiasts.

Pilots from across the area are expected to fly in, offering visitors an up‑close look at a variety of aircraft as they arrive and depart. Families often line the fence line to watch the activity, and children frequently get their first close encounter with small planes during the event.

Organizers say the Flight Breakfast has become as much a social gathering as an aviation event, with neighbors catching up over plates of pancakes and visitors returning year after year.

“It’s a morning where people slow down, walk the ramp, talk with pilots and car owners, and just enjoy being together,” one organizer said.

With food, flights and a lineup of vehicles on display, the event continues to serve as a kickoff to summer in Cherokee — and for many residents, May 31 is already circled on the calendar.
