What a year we had in 2024.
There is so much to say — but no words can express what we have experienced. Our area saw horrific devastation, but also the best in humanity. Volunteers came from all over to help piece use back together. People set aside their own problems to help others. We are on recovery road.
I want to thank you all for your efforts. Whether you made food, shoveled muck or rescued people on boats, thank you.
Monday, Jan. 13, 2025, marked the first day of the legislative session. Flood recovery and relief are at the top of my mind. I should also share — it is on the Governor’s list and many of my colleagues.
I appreciate everyone’s help, ideas and concern. We’re going to need some help this session. Knowing I can count on their time and attention will only make this process better.
Last Monday, Gov. Reynolds gave her Condition of the State address. She has put together a package of ways to help victims of natural disasters and implement some lessons learned. I had a chance to meet with her on Wednesday to learn about the details of her proposal and we will be getting more as the bill drafts come out. Her plan is reasonable, realistic and helpful. I am excited to help move her package forward.
On Tuesday, we heard an update on the Condition of the Judiciary from Chief Justice Susan Christensen. Then on Wednesday, we were briefed on the Condition of the National Guard. Major General Stephen Osborn highlighted two heroes for their work in Spencer and Sioux Rapids. Thank you, Staff Sergeant Tara Rew, Senior Master Sergeant Gary Sanders and everyone who came to our aid.
We were not in session Monday due to the Presidential Inauguration and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. But on Jan. 21, we had several leaders from the Spencer community at the Capitol to share the experience and needs.
Every new session is a fresh start. I am excited to be here, sharing the experiences of House District 6, and advocating for our area. It is an honor- and the privilege of walking up the Capitol steps never lost on me. Thank you.
