Capitol Letters: Managing mobile ID

Posted

Iowa was at the forefront of creating a mobile driver’s license, and now that option is transitioning.

The state was one of the first to offer citizens the ability to place their driver’s license on a mobile platform so that a person could have an official ID on their phone. This was done through DOT’s IA Mobile ID app. This app provided a valid form of identification which could be used at airports or on the road.

Last week, the DOT announced that they are transitioning this service. The app will be removed from app stores at the end of August and the IA Mobile ID app will be retired at the end of 2026. People who are currently using the app received a message about the changes last week.

Will Iowans still be able to have their license on their phones? Yes. Instead of using the app, they will be able to store their mobile ID in their Apple, Google, or Samsung wallet apps. Current users will receive several messages between now and the end of 2026 to remind them of the change. Directions for switching this to the phone wallet can be found at https://iowadot.gov/drivers-licenses-ids/mobile-id.

Veteran’s Day at the Iowa State Fair

The following was provided by the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs:

To honor those most responsible for America’s semi quincentennial, this year’s Veterans Day at the Iowa State Fair Parade Aug. 17, will celebrate America 250-IA by honoring the veteran-patriots of every U.S. conflict.

America was conceived in conflict. From the home-grown militia that started it all at Lexington and Concord in 1775, to today's most advanced military the world has ever known, no one is more responsible for America's very existence than the effort and sacrifice of the individual warrior-patriot — united with others just like them in a common cause. Those few earn the title “veteran.”
