BV Co. Conservation events: Fishing, snakes, pond critters and fireflies

Summertime Fishing & Fun

Come out to Gabrielson Park between 1-3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, for an afternoon of fun activities. The naturalist will be on site with all the supplies you need to go fishing as well as different activities and games to play.

We will have supplies for a make and take-home craft as well as snacks. Stop by for a bit or stay for the whole two hours. These activities are free of charge and designed for children ages two to 12. We ask that a parent or guardian stays with the child(ren).

We require reservations by Monday, July 13. To RSVP, contact the Conservation Office at 712-295-7985. We will meet at the Gabrielson shelter house near Sioux Rapids.

This event may be cancelled due to inclement weather or lack of participants.

 

World Snake Day

The Buena Vista County Conservation Board is celebrating World Snake Day on Thursday, July 16. The event will be held at Storm Lake Marina from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. and is come and go. Storm Lake Marina is located at 207 W. Marina Road, Storm Lake.

Stop out to meet the education ambassador snakes, make a craft and participate in snake-themed activities. Both events are free of charge. No registration is required.

 

Naturalist Lunch Box: Pond Critters

Summer is winding down and so is the Naturalist Lunch Box programs! Naturalist Lunch Box is held at noon on select Fridays in the summer at Storm Lake Marina. Pack a lunch and join the fun! Naturalist Lunch Box is designed for all ages. The naturalist will present a short program on a selected topic and have hands-on activities for younger audience members.

Friday, July 17, at 12 p.m. will be the next Naturalist Lunchbox program. The topic for this week is all about pond creatures and critters. Join us to learn all about Iowa’s macro-invertebrates with hands-on activities. 

If you plan on attending, please let the Conservation Office know by Wednesday, July 15, at 4 p.m. by calling 712-295-7985. This program can be cancelled due to inclement weather or lack of participants.

 

Nature Sprouts

Nature Sprouts is for children ages 0 to 5 years. It will be held once a month, May through October at Storm Lake Marina. Each month will be a new theme and we will have story, crafts, snacks, and hands on activities to fit the theme.

Our next Nature Sprouts of the summer will be on Tuesday, July 21, at 10 a.m. Meet at the Storm Lake Marina patio. The theme for July is fireflies.

Nature Sprouts is free of charge. However, registration is required. To register, call the Conservation Office at 712-295-7985 by Friday, July 17, at 4 p.m.
