Buena Vista County Conservation invites the public to take part in a hands-on monarch tagging program this September. Participants will learn about monarch migration, help tag butterflies and explore the prairie during peak monarch season.
This event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12 from 2-3:30 p.m. in the north area of Buena Vista Conservation Park located at 377 440th St., Peterson.
The program will begin with a short educational session introducing the monarch’s life cycle, their migration to Mexico and how tagging helps scientists track this incredible journey. After the presentation, attendees will help staff tag and release monarchs that were caught ahead of time. All tagging will be supervised to ensure safe handling.
Those who wish to try catching their own monarchs can then head into the prairie with nets. Any butterflies caught will be brought back to staff for tagging and release. Staff will be available throughout the event to assist and guide participants.
This program offers a fun, accessible way for community members of all ages to experience real citizen science while enjoying Iowa’s late-summer prairie. All equipment and tagging materials are provided.
Registration is required. Reserve your spot by visiting www.mycountyparks.org and search for Buena Vista County - Events - Monarch Tagging.
