Two 25’ x 17’ indoor mosaic murals by Rafa Olvera are part of a donation to Storm Lake by Dick Davis, the California benefactor who has had a hand in the creation and installation of previous mosaic murals in Storm Lake by artists from Zacatlan, Mexico.
The artworks, “Catrina” and “Lady with a Hat,” will be brought to Storm Lake next Monday, Sept. 8 by Rafa’s mother, artist Mary Carmen Olvera and her other son Oswaldo.
The two will be installing a mural based on a painting by Ella Witter at 514 Lake Ave. next week and the public is invited to watch this captivating process.
The indoor murals will hang temporarily in the Veso Cafe window until a final placement decision is made.
“Catrina” is widely considered an iconic symbol of Mexican culture, particularly Day of the Dead celebrations. “Lady with a Hat” depicts subject matter traditionally favored by artists in all media.
