National Night Out will be celebrated in Storm Lake on Tuesday, Aug. 5. The Storm Lake
Police Department has assisted in organizing 17 block parties around the community for this
year’s event. National Night Out is an annual campaign that promotes a positive relationship
between residents and law enforcement, as well as encouraging a sense of community among neighbors.
Everyone is invited to attend a block party near them. Get to know your neighbors, and learn
how to help keep Storm Lake a safe place for all.
Here are the block party locations for Aug. 5:
Storm Lake Police Department, Storm Lake Fire Department, BVRMC ambulance crews and
City of Storm Lake officials will be stopping at the events to visit with the public. They will
share safety tips, help residents to be aware of what is happening in their neighborhoods, and remind everyone of how to report issues to their local officials when needed.
Storm Lake and its Police Department have participated in the National Night Out program
since 1990, joining communities nationwide in working to create safer, more caring places to
live.
The National Night Out movement has grown over the years to include more than 17,000
communities in all 50 states, U.S. territories and military bases. About 40 million neighbors have taken part in the gatherings to date. Block parties can range from the simplest lawn-chair gatherings to more elaborate cookouts or potlucks with children’s events included.
Anyone who is interested in hosting a block party next year may contact Lt. Alyssa Solem at
the Storm Lake Police Department at 712 732-8010 or solem@stormlake.org
