Postseason begins for softball

St. Mary’s, Alta-Aurelia see seasons end in regional losses


GTRA scored five runs in the fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie as the Titans went on to defeat Storm Lake St. Mary’s 10-3 in the first round of the Class 1A regional tournament on Monday at Ruthven.

St. Mary’s took a 1-0 lead in the first. GTRA led 3-1 after three before the Panthers tied it at 3-3 in the fourth.

St. Mary’s had even hits in the game. Chelsey Gibbins led the way with two. Neely Bacon, Aubrey Crum, Avery Smith, Jenna Merten and Dani Young all added one hit. Smith drove in two runs and Crum had one RBI.

Bacon took the loss. She allowed eight hits, walked four and struck out 10.

St. Mary’s (2-15) committed five errors in the game.

East Sac County 13, Alta-Aurelia 3

East Sac County plated five runs in the sixth inning as the Raiders ended Alta-Aurelia’s season in the first round of the Class 2A regional tournament on Monday at Wall Lake.

East Sac County led 3-0 after the first inning and 5-0 after two. The Warriors scored a run in the third and two in the sixth to pull within 8-3.

Alta-Aurelia had one hit in the game — an infield single by Nora Peterson. Clare Gunkelman had two RBI.

Hayden Berkland took the loss. She allowed four hits and five runs, walked three and struck out none in one inning. Leah Kannegieter gave up seven hits and eight runs, walked four and struck out four in 4 1/3 innings of relief.

Alta-Aurelia finished its season 5-19.
