Pegee “Peg” was born Oct. 31, 1934, in Eldora. She was the daughter of John and Gladys (Smith) Bogue. She was raised on a farm near New Providence and graduated from New Providence (home of the Round house) with the class of 1953. She loved being part of the girls basketball team and was proud to represent the school in the state free throw contest. As a young teenager, she and her sisters learned to milk cows and when it was close to milking time, she could be heard calling “come boss” to the field near by. She was expert in getting them to come to the barn. She also worked part-time cleaning house for a local family.
Following graduation, she attended Evangelical Hospital School of Nursing in Marshalltown. She became an RN in 1956. She started her nursing career in the OB department at Fort Dodge Hospital. She was one of five sisters who graduated from Evangelical Hospital School of Nursing.
Peg met Delmar Bartling in Iowa Falls and they were married Aug. 18, 1961, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua They were blessed with a son, Michael, and Delmar’s son, Steve, from a previous marriage. They lived in Iowa Falls, then Topeka, Kan. then Omaha, Neb., and then moved to Storm Lake.
Their moves related to Delmar’s employment. Delmar passed away in 1985. Peg did not return to nursing after becoming a widow and was employed by several families in the Storm Lake area as a housekeeper and there were more requests for her expertise in caring for a home that she could fill. She also worked at a local restaurant, Embers, part-time.
While Delmar was alive, they enjoyed going to a lake, fishing and spending time outdoors. They especially enjoyed Minnesota. She enjoyed working outside.
In her later years, Peg lived for deer hunting with her son, Mike, and nephew, Andy. She got her first buck with her muzzleloader at the age of 82. Those who hunted with Peg all agree her shooting prowess could leave you speechless. She always enjoyed lunch and coffee time with family and friends.
Peg’s mother passed away in 1945 when Peg was 10. Her father married in 1946 to widow Edna Runyan Bogue. Our family grew from three to 10 as we gained six siblings.
Peg was preceded in death by her parents, John and Gladys Bogue; stepmom Edna; three siblings in infancy; two sisters, Betty Partridge (Richard) and Patty Ann Ballard (Richard); and brothers: Bob Runyan, Gene Runyan and John Runyan.
Peg is survived by sons, Steve Bartling and Michael Bartling (Sara); and sisters Patty Lou Nichol and Midge Thornton (David).
