Newell-Fonda blanks Boyer Valley in first round of districts

Newell-Fonda scored two insurance runs in the sixth inning, and Max Carlson and Brooks Bellcock combined to pitch a three-hit shutout as the Mustangs began Class 1A district tournament play with a 3-0 win over Boyer Valley last Saturday at Moville.

Newell-Fonda, now 15-10, played Remsen St. Mary’s   (20-4) in a district semifinal game on Tuesday at Remsen.

Newell-Fonda took a 1-0 lead in the third inning before plating two runs in the sixth to go ahead 3-0.

Carlson allowed only two hits, walked none and struck out four in 42⁄3 innings to get the win. Bellcock gave up one hit, walked none and struck out one in 21⁄3 innings of relief.

Newell-Fonda finished with eight hits in the game. Ty Tauber led the way with two. Carlson, Bellcock, Trevor Tauber, Jackson Bellcock, Brady Babel and Kellen Meyer all had one hit.

Babel drove in two runs with a double in the sixth and Ty Tauber knocked in a run with a single in the third.

“Our defense was good and our pitching was unbelieveable,” Newell-Fonda coach Nathan Baron said. “Max and Brooks did an outstanding job on the mound for us. We held them to three hits and we kept them off-balance. They just had a really good pitching game. They located the ball well and mixed speeds.”
