New lake water monitoring system operational

Posted

A Water Monitoring System has been installed and is now reporting data on Storm Lake. The system is located near the Iowa Department of Natural Resources hatchery building at Casino Beach Marina.

The project was proposed earlier this year by the DNR Fisheries program. The cost of the monitoring station was shared by the local Lake Preservation Association, and partner entities of the Lake Improvement Commission (the cities of Storm Lake and Lakeside, and Buena Vista County.) The DNR will maintain and calibrate the equipment.

The data collected by the system will be fully accessible by the public, via the United States Geological Survey website, at Storm Lake at Storm Lake, IA - USGS Water Data for the Nation.

The new system will monitor lake depth in real time, and compare it to historical data. Water temperature will also be available, as well as the opportunity to post future results for field and laboratory water sampling at the monitoring location.
