Letters to the Editor: It takes a community

Posted

Caring Paws, the community volunteer organization behind the drive to create a no kill animal shelter in Storm Lake, has made significant progress in recent months. We have strong leadership and a functioning committee structure. Working with city council and the city administration, we are helping update and create city code that will be supportive of our efforts.

The one thing we have not yet tackled in earnest is funding. This is where you can play a part with minimal effort. Our research has shown that the can and bottle redemption in Iowa is a significant resource for area animal shelters. We are in the process of acquiring and placing receptacles in town where you can drop off your cans and bottles. If that is not convenient enough, we are willing to pick up from your location on a schedule determined by you. Whether you are a business, a homeowner, or renter we want you involved. Text or call me at 712-291-0555 and we’ll set up a time to discuss and pick up from you. Engaged communities are raising $2,000 per month doing this. Don’t think your small quantities won’t help make a big difference.

It takes a community and community begins with you.

Mike Frantz, Storm Lake

Is Trump ‘your guy?’

Do we have to stockpile birth control pills since Trump’s Project 2025 will eliminate all contraceptives?

Do we have to make space in our homes to hide our immigrant family members from being gathered up, put into camps and ultimately deported?

Do our children have to go hungry because Project 2025 will eliminate the school breakfast and lunch programs?

Do LGBTQ individuals have to change their identity so Project 2025 won’t prosecute them?

Project 2025 will eliminate Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Do you really believe that Trump is “your guy”?
