John Newton Hughes III

John Newton Hughes III, 82, of Storm Lake died Friday, Oct. 13, 2023 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral services will take place Thursday, Oct. 19, at 11 a.m. at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place Friday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m. at Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines.

On July 25, 1941, John Newton Hughes III was born to John N. Hughes II and Jeanne MacArthur Hughes in Des Moines. He was baptized and confirmed at First Methodist Church in Des Moines, where he remained a lifelong member. In 1959, John graduated from Roosevelt High School. He went on to attend Northwestern College in Orange City, graduating in 1972 with a degree in art education. He then worked as a teacher until he became a social worker in 1978. He worked at Cherokee Mental Health Institute.

On June 9, 1979, John married Pamela Johnson in Storm Lake. They were blessed with two children: Young John and Julie.

John enjoyed being active on the Storm Lake library board for 12 years and was a member of Buena Vista Rifle and Pistol Club for20 years. His main hobby was photography and sold a few photos to the Iowan Magazine over the years.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Pam Hughes of Storm Lake; daughter Julie (Dr. David) Jenkins of Phoenix, Ariz.; brother James Hughes of Des Moines; step-grandchildren: Carrie, Sarah and Brian; extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father Judge John N. Hughes Il; mother Jeanne Hughes; and his son, John N. Hughes IV.
