Candyce “Candy” Valorie Long was born to Warren and Wanda (Hoffert) Long on March 19, 1960 in Columbia, S.C.
Candy attended elementary school in Cylinder, and went on to graduate high school from Emmetsburg. Prior to her senior year in high school, she met the love of her life, Mark Eugene Thompson, at the racetrack in Alta. To say it was love at first sight is an understatement, as Mark said within minutes of seeing her, she was going to be his wife. On Jan. 13, 1978, Candy graduated high school. On Jan. 14, 1978, Mark and Candy married at United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg. To this union, they had six children: Christina, Angela, Jeffrey, Melanie, Mark “Squeak” and Stephanie.
Candy worked many jobs over her life that typically revolved around agriculture, bartending, cleaning and babysitting. Candy was a lifeguard and manager at the Sioux Rapids pool. Candy was also a talented seamstress, often known for making beautiful quilts, dresses, clothes and much more. Her most prideful yet notable life role was being a wife, mother and grandmother. Her grandchildren seemed to wrap her the easiest around their fingers.
Candy had several hobbies and interests ranging from camping, fishing, sewing, baking, gardening and crocheting. She was a sports fan and enjoyed watching the Cubs, Packers, Iowa Hawkeyes, Iowa State Cyclones and the Chiefs. Her greatest pride and joy was following her grandkids’ activities and buying/decorating for the holidays, especially Christmas.
Candy was preceded in death by her parents, Warren and Wanda Long; parents-in-law, Ivan and Virginia Thompson; maternal and paternal grandparents; brother-in-law David Thompson; and sister-in-law Barbara Sundberg.
Left to cherish Candy’s memory include her beloved husband Mark Thompson of Sioux Rapids; children: Christy (Eric) Driver of Sioux Rapids; Angela (Paul) Christian of Linn Grove; Jeffrey (Jessica) Thompson of Ruthven; Melanie (Mathew) Elbert of Whittemore; Mark (Niki) Thompson of Sutherland; Stephanie (Paul) Piddington of Sioux Rapids; grandchildren: Connor, Layla, Lilly, Aiden, Nora, Jack, Landon, Madelynn, Zander, Nolan, Parker, Finley, Logan, Hudson, Allison and Ivan; and a host of other family and friends.
