Alta City Park dedicated

Mayor Kevin Walsh dedicated Alta City Park on Saturday June 29 at 2 p.m., amidst a crowd of residents.

After welcoming everyone, he told the story of the grant that made the new park possible. Justin Yarosevich of Storm Lake originally told Walsh about a funding opportunity during the pandemic, through the Iowa Economic Development Authority. The grant aimed to improve social-distancing in outdoor spaces, so a walking path and benches are an important part of a design that includes playground areas, a ping pong table and the central shelter.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the completion of the project.

During the mayor’s welcome, families gathered around picnic tables. Volunteers set out drinks and popcorn as younger children waited for bounce houses to inflate. Older siblings enjoyed a free swim at the city pool, in honor of the celebration.

Families had an opportunity to see the fire trucks, sheriffs’ vehicles and an ambulance, thanks to officers and emergency workers present at the event.

Mayor Walsh thanked Alta Park Board members, past and present, and all the businesses and individuals working with and for the city who made this event possible.

The afternoon concluded with homemade cookies and hot dogs.
