Clifford “Cliff” Hansen, 91, of Spencer died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2023 at Sanford Sheldon Care Center.
Memorial services will take place Wednesday, Nov. 22, at 1 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place prior to the funeral at the church with family present from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.
Cliff was born on Feb. 4, 1932, in Carroll County to James and Alice McGilvery and later he was adopted by William Hansen. He graduated from high school at Nemaha and he married Betty Meyer on Jan 8, 1956, officiated by Reverend Bob Smith.
Cliff started farming at Nemaha and bought their farm at Marathon in 1974. He retired from farming and moved to Spencer in 2011. His hobbies were riding horses, doing tractor pulls, collecting coins, guns and antiques, and they both traveled around the states and overseas. He enjoyed visiting and having the grandkids stay overnight and then watching all of their school activities and racing events.
He is survived by his wife Betty; daughters: Dawn Valenti from Pace, Fla.; Shawn Purcell (Dan) from Waukee; and Candace Smith (Tobin) from Sheldon; grandchildren: Jeremiah Johnson of Des Moines; Jenny Johnson of Grimes; Lane Smith and Colin Smith of Sheldon; great-grandchildren: Ella Synwrong, Saydee Johnson, Remi Haberthorn, Laila Johnson and Roman Wardlow; sister Leanne (Gordon) Reynolds of Early; sister-in-law Marlene Hansen of Newell; and many nieces and nephews.
Cliff was preceded in death by his mother Alice Hansen; stepfather William Hansen; sisters, Lael Backy and Lolly Karstens; brother Otis Hansen; and brother-in-law Duane Karstens.
In lieu of flowers, Cliff would like memorials to go to Northwest Iowa Humane Society in Milford.
