Alta-Aurelia cruises past GTRA in district tournament opener

Alta-Aurelia scored four runs in the second inning to take control and then pulled away with a six-run fourth inning to beat GTRA 12-2 in the first round of the Class 1A district tournament last Saturday.

Alta-Aurelia, now 20-7, played George-Little Rock    (5-12) in a district semifinal game on Tuesday in Alta.

Alta-Aurelia took a 2-0 lead in the first before GTRA tied it in the second. The Warriors answered with four runs in the second to go ahead 6-2.

Alta-Aurelia recorded 14 hits in the game. Gavin Sleezer and Camden Reinert led the way with three apiece. Sam Sennert and Gabe Olsen added two apiece. Cale Brechwald, Peyton Meyer, Brayden Marshall and Maddux McCoy each had one hit.

Sleezer drove in four runs while Sennert had three RBI and Olsen two. Brechwald and Jaxson Page each had one RBI. Sleezer, Sennert and Olsen all scored two runs.

Brechwald got the win. He allowed one hit and two unearned runs, walked three and struck out six in two innings. Sennert gave up one hit, walked one and struck out two in three innings of relief.

“Always good to get a win this time of year and start the playoff run,” Alta-Aurelia coach Ryan Burkhart said. “It took us a while to settle in and get into our game, but I was happy with how we swung the bat and ran the bases. We didn’t play sharp defense or pound the strike zone early in the game, but once we got those settled it felt like we were able to execute and get rolling. This time of year is always fun, and the added pressure of playoff games creates some excitement that I know we all enjoy.”
