SL defeats D-S, Newell-Fonda falls to RSM

Storm Lake left multiple runners in scoring position on base in every inning, but the Tornadoes were able to overcome it with solid pitching as they beat Denison-Schleswig 6-2 on Wednesday at Tornado Field.

Jake Eddie pitched six innings and allowed only three hits while walking three and striking out 12 batters. Austin Gaffney pitched the seventh. He allowed no hits and struck out one.

Storm Lake had eight hits in the game. Aiden Phillips led the charge with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and two RBI. Gaffney also had two hits. Sam Dvergsten added an RBI single. Eddie and Carson Lullmann each doubled.

Denison-Schleswig was plagued by five errors in the game.

“I thought we did a nice job overall,” Storm Lake coach Ben Seaman said. “We have a few things that we could clean up to prevent innings from getting long. From an offense perspective, I think we are doing a nice job at the plate and battling. We need to keep getting runners in when we have them in scoring position. Defensively, we are just having some untimely errors following a walk or something, and we can’t let mistakes compound because that turns into bigger innings. I thought Jake pitched an excellent game and we had some timely hits.”

Remsen St. Mary’s 10

Newell-Fonda 0

Remsen St. Mary’s, ranked No. 10 in Class 1A, scored five runs in the first two innings and then plated five more in the fifth to pull away as the Hawks spoiled Newell-Fonda’s season opener on Wednesday in Remsen.

St. Mary’s pitcher Carter Schorg held the Mustangs to only two hits while walking one and striking out 10 over five innings.

Spencer 8

Alta-Aurelia 2

Carson Reinert slugged a solo home run, but it wasn’t enough as Spencer handed Alta-Aurelia a setback on Tuesday at Spencer.

The Tigers scored two runs in the first inning, one in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth. Alta-Aurelia scored a run in the first and one in the sixth.

The Warriors were limited to four hits in the game. Reinert homered while Cale Brechwald, Cade Ahnemann and Tanner Randall each singled.

Reinert took the loss. He allowed two hits and six runs, five of which were earned, walked seven and struck out nine in 31⁄3 innings. McCoy gave up three hits and two runs, walked two and struck out four in 22⁄3 innings of relief.

“We’ve got a young team this year, and at times we showed our youth, but we also did some really great things as well,” Alta-Aurelia coach Ryan Burkhart said. “This team will just keep gaining experience as the season goes on and we’ll keep coaching them up as fast as we can. Spencer had a quality pitcher on the mound and he challenged us a lot, which is valuable for us early in the season.”
