Sioux Central uses balance to capture Twin Lakes girls track title

Team wins only three events en route to title

Preslie Peterson and Linnea Bloom each won an individual event and one relay team was victorious as Sioux Central captured the team title in the Twin Lakes Conference girls track and field meet on Tuesday at Manson.

The Rebels scored 120 points. Alta-Aurelia was second with 98.5, Newell-Fonda sixth with 63.5 and Storm Lake St. Mary’s 12th with 19.

In the field events, Alta-Aurelia’s Nora Peterson took second in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet even. Newell-Fonda’s Lindsey Wolf and Alta-Aurelia’s Allison Watts tied for fourth in 4-10. Wolf’s leap tied a Newell-Fonda school record.

Sioux Central’s Brynn Webber finished second in the long jump with a leap of 14-8. Preslie Peterson was fourth in 14-6, Newell-Fonda’s Kinzee Hinders fifth in 13-5 and Alta-Aurelia’s Jaci DeGroot eighth in 13-0.

Sioux Central’s Hannah Illg-Keith placed sixth in the discus with a toss of 86-9. Newell-Fonda’s Lexi Roberts took third in the shot put with a throw of 33-6. Illg-Keith was sixth in 31-2.

Sioux Central finished second in the sprint medley relay with a time of 1 minute, 57.14 seconds. Newell-Fonda was third in 1:58.18 and Alta-Aurelia fourth in a time of 2:03.35.

Alta-Aurelia’s Nora Peterson set a new meet record in winning the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:57.61. St. Mary’s Karla Limones and Bianca Limones placed sixth and eighth with times of 12:57.15 and 13:04.78.

Alta-Aurelia placed second in the 4×800 relay with a time of 10:52.47. Sioux Central was fourth in 10:55.61 and Newell-Fonda eighth in a time of 11:48.

Sioux Central’s shuttle hurdle relay tandem of Ryleigh Waldstein, Alyse Terrell, Berkley Johannsen and Peterson finished first in a time of 1:13.75. Alta-Aurelia was fifth in 1:16.84.

Sioux Central’s Hadley Ayers took fourth in the 100 meters with a clocking of 13.65 seconds. Webber was sixth in 13.71 and Newell-Fonda’s Isabel Bartek seventh in 13.72 seconds.

Alta-Aurelia’s distance medley relay team of Jenna Nielsen, Maria Kueny, Brielle Engelmann and Peterson finished first with a time of 4:29.49. Newell-Fonda was second in 4:37.41 and Sioux Central third in 4:54.73.

Bloom finished second in the 400 meters in 1:03.23.

Newell-Fonda’s 4×200 relay unit of Bartek, Macy Sievers, Mia Walker and Mary Walker finished first with a time of 1:51.86. Sioux Central was fourth in a clocking of 1:56.89.

Preslie Peterson won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.64 seconds. Watts was third in 16.87, St. Mary’s Danika Demers fourth in 17.1 and Waldstein fifth in a time of 17.3 seconds.

Nora Peterson won the 800 meters with a time of 2:28.84. Engelmann was fourth in 2:38.62 and Sioux Central’s Morgan Christian sixth in 2:40.18.

Newell-Fonda’s Mia Walker finished third in the 200 meters in a time of 28.16 seconds. Watts was fourth in 28.21, Webber fifth in 28.53 and Kueny eighth in 28.7.

Demers won the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:09.96. Preslie Peterson was second in 1:10.91, Newell-Fonda’s Emma Erickson third in 1:11.48, Alta-Aurelia’s Shea Peterson fourth in 1:12.73 and Alta-Aurelia’s Lucy Gunkelman seventh in a time of 1:17.1.

Bloom won the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:25.23. Alta-Aurelia’s Taylor Robertson was fourth in 5:33.32 and Sioux Central’s Allison Ehlers sixth in 5:42.03.

Newell-Fonda took third in the 4×100 relay with a time of 53.51 seconds. Sioux Central was sixth in 55.93 and Alta-Aurelia eighth in 57.81.

Alta-Aurelia took second in the 4×400 relay with a time of 4:34.85. Sioux Central was third in 4:36.75 and Newell-Fonda fifth in 4:44.61.

“We had a great night that included a lot of season PRs,” Alta-Aurelia coach Tim Galvin said. “Several girls stepped up big in some important spots. It was definately a team effort. Anytime you end up near the top in the Twin Lakes Conference, you have to feel good about your team’s performance.”
