Scammers want you to click

Thank you to Sally Robbins who sent us this example of a UPS scam. “It’s a text I just got. Bad grammar, letters and numbers (0 and O) used in the wrong place, and sent this late at night,” she says. Also, UPS doesn’t use periods between the letters. Sally adds: “Also, I doubt any service lists the name of the specific delivery driver in a text. Don’t fall for this stuff and don’t click on the links. Don’t respond, either.”

More on scams

We have gotten lots of positive feedback on last Wednesday’s story about the local woman almost scammed out of $15,000. One reader suggested we publish the Iowa Attorney General’s phone number: 888-777-4590. Call this number if you think you are being scammed.

If someone you don’t know calls and tries to sell you something you had not planned to buy – particularly if they’re asking you to act now – say no.

If the caller you don’t know pressures you to provide personal information, like financial information or your Social Security number, or claims you must pay a government agency or utility service immediately, it’s likely a scam.
