Ridge View plays its best game of the season in shutting out Treynor, 14-0

Ridge View’s defense came to play last Friday night.

The Raptors held Treynor to only 130 yards of total offense, including 70 in the final three quarters as they won their Class 1A first round playoff game over the Cardinals 14-0 at Treynor.

Ridge View, now 6-3, will play West Sioux (8-1) in the second round on Friday at 7 p.m. in Hawarden.

“I thought our boys played their best game of the year,” Ridge View coach Dale Tokheim said. “We probably had our fewest mistakes in a game and just played the most complete game of the year. Coach (Brian) Bode had a great defensive plan and the boys really executed it well. They only had 130 yards and 60 of those came in the first quarter.

“I think it just took us a while to get used to the game speed and how they really do things,” Tokheim added. “A scout team in practice does the best they can, but it is different on game night, and once we adjusted to the game speed we shut them down. Our defensive line and linebackers really controlled the line of scrimmage, and when they did try and pass, the pressure caused him to throw early and either throw incompletions or interceptions. Tyler Kolpin had a great night. His first interception came late in the third quarter right after Cade Harriman threw an interception.”

The first half was a defensive struggle as neither team scored. Ridge View, however, broke through in the third quarter when quarterback Cade Harriman ran it in from 2 yards out. The PAT made it 7-0 Raptors.

It stayed that way until the fourth quarter when the Raptors scored again to take a 14-0 lead. Harriman ran 24 yards for the score.

That was more than enough points for Ridge View’s defense, who controlled the rest of the game.

Ridge View finished with 309 yards of total offense, including 217 rushing and 92 passing. Harriman led the way with 97 yards on 21 carries. Brody Deitering added 62 yards and Earnie Clayton 58.

Harriman was 9 of 16 passing for 92 yards. Deitering caught three passes for 29 yards and Tyhler Kolpin had three catches for 28 yards for the winners.

“Offensively, it just took us a while to figure out what we needed to do to move the ball consistently,” Tokheim said. “We moved the ball OK in the first half and had a chance to score, but gave it up on downs inside their 15. After we talked at halftime as a staff and with the offensive line, we decided to just run right at them. Earnie Clayton had 44 yards in the third quarter and Brody Deitering had 44 yards in the fourth quarter. They both ran hard and the offensive line just took over. I thought our depth helped and we wore them down. Cade Harriman made some great reads and threw some nice passes and led us with 97 rushing yards.”

Deitering and Clayton led the Raptors on defense with six total tackles apiece. Tracin Price and Chayden Wright each had 4.5 stops and Harriman recorded four.

Kolpin intercepted two passes and Ethan Mason had one interception. Kolton Luscombe recovered a fumble.

“It was just a great team win and I am very proud of these young men and happy for them,” Tokheim said. “They have worked very hard the last couple of years to put themselves in this situation where they get the opportunity to play in these playoff games.”
