Newell Historical Society open house Aug. 6

The grant will help fund the big paint job ahead at the Allee Mansion. Why will it cost $60,000, we asked Marilyn Monson of the Newell Historical Society. “It includes several exterior repairs plus the cost of six colors of paint.” Six new colors will be used and a lighter Victorian color scheme has been chosen. The paint job includes 70-some windows inside and out as well as porch spools and posts on three porches and gingerbread trim. (Photo by Dolores Cullen)

The Newell Historical Society invites everyone to its annual open house on Saturday, Aug. 6 from 1-4 p.m. at the Allee Mansion, located on the Iowa State University Demonstration Farm one mile south of Newell.

Bring your family and enjoy a tour entitled “Life Without Electricity!” Free air-conditioned tours, lawn displays, live music and refreshments will be available.

The Newell cemetery walk begins at 4-6 p.m. with guided tours highlighting local people of interest from years gone by.

Actual live characters standing by their burial site will share tales of their life and the town’s history.

The rain location will be the Allee Mansion. All activities are part of Newell Watermelon Days, Aug. 6-7. Check the City of Newell’s website for information.
