Trey Jungers fired a two-hitter and Mason Dicks went 2-for-2 and scored two runs as Newell-Fonda picked up its first win of the season with a 5-1 triumph over Storm Lake on Tuesday at Tornado Field.

The game was called because of rain in the top of the sixth inning, making it an official game.

Storm Lake took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Edgar Barreiro tripled and later scored.

Newell-Fonda tied it 1-1 in the second inning and led 2-1 after four innings. The Mustangs plated three runs in the fifth to go ahead 5-1.

Newell-Fonda had seven hits in the game. Dicks had a pair of singles to lead the way. Carter Sievers, Ryan Greenfield, Ty Tauber, Max Carlson and Beau Wilken each had a single.

Jungers allowed two hits and one earned run, walked none and struck out five in five innings to get the win.

Barreiro had both of Storm Lake’s hits.

Hunter DeMey took the loss. He allowed seven hits and five earned runs, walked three and struck out three in five innings.

“This was a good start to our week and a good look at our lineup with everybody finally here,” Newell-Fonda coach Bo Darrow said. “Jungers gave us great efficiency on the mound and set our defense up for success. We played solid in the field behind him. I was pleased with our approaches at the plate and we have to continue to emphasize the approach. There’s still much for us to improve on, but there were a lot of positives to build on.”

“Ultimately, we didn’t really come ready to play and Newell-Fonda was ready to go,” Storm Lake coach Ben Seaman said. “We didn’t play great defense, had some mental mistakes, and didn’t have a great approach at the plate. We’ll have to make sure we understand the importance of being ready to play no matter the conditions, and come with more enthusiasm.”
