Newell-Fonda used a quick 7-0 run late in the third quarter to turn the momentum around and the Mustangs maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way as they defeated Kingsley-Pierson   69-50 in a Class 1A district semifinal game last Thursday at Newell.

It was Newell-Fonda’s 15th straight win.

Newell-Fonda, now 21-2, played Woodbury Central (15-8) in a district final game on Tuesday night at Kingsley. The winner plays either Remsen St. Mary’s or South O’Brien in the substate finals on Saturday at Le Mars.

Carter Sievers scored 21 points to lead Newell-Fonda. Trey Jungers added 17. Beau Wilken scored nine points while Ryan Greenfield, Caden Meyer and jaron Vanderhoff all added six. Caden Vanden Bosch chipped in with four.

Meyer led in rebounding with eight. Jungers and Wilken each had three. Mason Dicks charted six assists. Greenfield added five, and Jungers and Sievers three apiece. Dicks tallied four steals. Jungers and Greenfield each had three. Vanden Bosch blocked a pair of shots.

Newell-Fonda made 26 of 49 field goals for 53 percent, including 10 of 25 from beyond the 3-point arc.

“The guys played well again,” Newell-Fonda coach Chad Buchholz said. “We jumped on them early due to our defensive pressure. They did not get many good looks in the first quarter. They switched up their defense in the second quarter and went to a man-to-man defense. We didn’t handle that the best. We had a few forced shots and a couple silly turnovers that were not like us. That allowed them to cut into our lead some heading into halftime.

“We settled down at half and regrouped,” Buchholz added. “I thought the first couple minutes of the third we played well and then they started making some 3-point shots. We got tight and did not have much ball movement. They cut it to six and we called a timeout. We made a few adjustments and went on a very quick 7-0 run in late third and ended the quarter on a 12-2 run. That quick run gave us our energy back and settled us down and we weren’t so tight after that.

“We played well in the fourth and closed it out,” Buchholz continued. “It was a great overall team win. The scout team guys gave us a great look all week in practice that got us ready for this one. We need to work on a few things and have a couple good practices heading into the district final.”
