Newell-Fonda, Alta-Aurelia, five individuals advance to regional finals in girls golf

Newell-Fonda and Alta-Aurelia advanced to the regional finals in team play and five individuals advanced after a Class 1A regional first round tournament last Friday at Graettinger.

Newell-Fonda finished first with a team score of 390. Alta-Aurelia was second with a 396. They both advance to the regional finals today in Newell. The top two teams there advance to the state meet.

Five individual players advanced to regional finals as well. Alta-Aurelia’s Shea Lockin was the meet medalist with a 93. Alta-Aurelia’s Chloe Elston and Newell-Fonda’s Nevaeh Lyman tied for runner-up medalist with a 95. Newell-Fonda’s Alexis Barber finished fourth with a 97 and Storm Lake St. Mary’s Maddie Fiorendino was fifth with a 97.

Newell-Fonda had five of the top 10 scores overall. After Lyman and Barber, Grace Erickson stroked a 99, Emma Erickson had a 100 and Laney Hogrefe shot a 102. Brooke Jackson golfed a 107.

Alta-Aurelia received a 100 from Maggie Bloom. Ella Nielsen carded a 108 and Addy Friz shot a 110.

Storm Lake St. Mary’s finished fourth as a team with a 431. Ellie Bacon carded a 102 while Sydney Hurd shot a 114 and Natalie Green a 118.

“Maddie Fiorendino is continuing her fine freshman season by qualifying for the second round of regionals as an individual,” St. Mary’s coach Lynn Hardt said. “Ellie Bacon finished her senior season with her lowest 18-hole score. As a team, the girls are scoring much lower this season than last. Hopefully, the improvement will continue in 2023.”

Class 2A regional at Holstein

Sioux Central’s Kendra Casey captured medalist honors and Ridge View’s Emma Vohs finished sixth overall as both golfers advanced to the regional finals after a Class 2A first round regional tournament played last Friday at Holstein.

Pocahontas Area (387) and Okoboji (393) finished first and second to advance in team play. Sioux Central was fifth with a 422 and Ridge View seventh with a 455.

Casey led the Rebels with an 85. She won the meet by seven strokes. Madison Thomsen golfed a 105, Natalie Laursen a 109 and Kaitlyn Rusk shot a 123. Brooklyn Vanderhoff carded a 135 and Elise Rusk finished with a 162.

Beth Mentzer golfed a 110 for Ridge View. Emma Mentzer shot a 117, Kierstin Volkert a 133 and Addison Voge a 143.
