Long live the kings

Beaver court goes gender-neutral

The court was made up of 10 seniors, from left: Emily Newton, Cara Kempadoo, Taylor Wedemeyer, Sam Bardwell, Brayden Bergum, Landon Weber, Lauryn Kalkowski, Colin Imhoff, Alondra Melendez and Jadyn Forbes.

Did you notice there are two kings in the Buena Vista University Homecoming Court?

“The BVU Homecoming Court Committee decided to refocus this year’s court to celebrate the top two student leaders as voted on by their peers, regardless of gender,” said Tim Gallagher, assistant director of communications at BVU.

Gender-neutral homecoming courts have become more common at universities, colleges and some high schools.

BVU’s Homecoming week celebration for students included a silent disco, trivia-thon, a student lip-sync battle and more. Alumni and friends returned to campus to join students in the festivities as BVU rounded out the week with a football game against the University of Dubuque on Saturday and a free concert featuring Cantus, the BVU Concert Choir, and members of the Storm Lake High School Choir on Sunday.
