Five players advance to districts, no teams make it

St. Mary’s Mason Laven hits a chip shot during Wednesday’s Class 1A sectional tournament played in Newell.

Five individual golfers advanced to the district tournament after playing in sectional tournaments in Classes 1A, 2A and 3A on Wednesday.

Three of those five came from a Class 1A sectional at Newell — St. Mary’s Mason Laven and Toby Jones, and Newell-Fonda’s Mason Dicks. Ridge View’s Aiden Martin advanced in 2A and Storm Lake’s Sam Dvergsten made it in 3A.

No area teams were able to qualify for districts.

Akron-Westfield (336) and Le Mars Gehlen (341) advanced after finishing first and second in a 1A sectional at Newell. Storm Lake St. Mary’s was third with a 346 and Newell-Fonda tied for fourth with a 352.

Laven was the meet medalist with a 79. Jones tied for fifth overall with an 85. Laven and Jones will both play at districts on Monday in Denison. Lane Carlson shot an 89, Bennett Smith a 93, Tanner Fiorendino a 96 and John Heitman a 118.

Dicks had the low score for Newell-Fonda as he tied for fifth overall with an 85. He will play in districts on Monday in Denison. Izak Baron shot an 87 for the Mustangs while Jaron Vanderhoff and Beau Wilken each carded a 90. Guyson Lyman golfed a 91 and Ryan Greenfield a 97.

Class 2A at Mapleton

Ridge View’s Aiden Martin finished third overall in a Class 2A sectional tournament at Mapleton to advance to the district tournament on Monday in Shenandoah.

Martin carded an 82 to make the cut for districts.

OABCIG (339) and Sheldon (351) finished first and second to advance. Ridge View placed fourth with a 354 and Alta-Aurelia was sixth with a 366.

Gavin Vohs carded an 85 for Ridge View. Brady Clausen shot an 88, Cayden Clausen a 99, Levi Albers a 105 and Ethan Mason finished with a 112.

Cale Brechwald led Alta-Aurelia with an 87. Jack Bloom golfed a 90, Carson Reinert a 93 and Isaiah Segovia a 96. Connor Weinhold shot a 98 and Lucas Baker finished with a 100.

Class 2A at Okoboji

Emmetsburg (333) and Pocahontas (336) finished first and second in a Class 2A sectional tournament at Okoboji to advance to districts. Sioux Central placed sixth with a 461.

Sioux Central’s Nathan Kueny missed the district cut by one stroke with an 87. Jaxsen Payne golfed a 118, Bryson Smith a 126 and Grayson Hermstead a 130. Rayce Meyer shot a 136 and Jacob Gunderson had a 162.

Class 3A at Orange City

MOC-Floyd Valley, Spencer and Webster City finished first, second and third in a Class 3A sectional at Orange City to advance to the district tournament on Monday in Spencer.

Storm Lake tied Humboldt for fifth with a 342.

Storm Lake’s Sam Dvergsten qualified for districts after firing an 82 to lead the Tornadoes. Charlie Dvergsten was one stroke off with an 83. Carson Lullmann golfed an 87 and Brody Boeckman shot a 90. Jake Eddie finished with a 95 and Beau Boeckman had a 97.

“I’m super proud of this team and their efforts this season,” Storm Lake coach Andrew Zinn said. “I cannot be more proud of Sam.”
