Don Johnson


Don Johnson, 95, of Albert City died on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2020 at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Albert City.

Public graveside services were held on Monday, Dec. 7, at Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Albert City Fire Department: 314 Fourth St. North; Albert City, IA 50510. Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City was in charge of the arrangements.

Donald Paul Johnson, son of Gunnard and Carrie (Aspholm) Johnson, was born at the Storm Lake Hospital in Storm Lake, on Oct. 7, 1925. He received his education at the Albert City Public School and graduated with the class of 1943. Don was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albert City.

Don served during World War II as a Radioman 2nd Class with the U.S. Navy. He entered the service in October 1943, completing his basic training in Farragut, Idaho. He passed radio training in Indianapolis, Ind. and completed the rest of his service on a ship in the Sea of Japan. He received his honorable discharge from the Navy in April 1945.

On Sept. 18, 1948, Don was united in marriage to Marjorie Mae Pierson in Jackson, Minn. This couple was blessed with five children: Howard, Brian, Jeffrey, Gail and Thomas. They spent their married lives in the Albert City community, where Don owned and operated an electrical and plumbing business for more than 50 years.

Don was a lifelong member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. He also served on the Albert City Fire Department for many years and volunteered many hours to the Albert City Threshermen and Collector Show and the Albert City Historical Museum. Don was an accomplished horseshoe thrower, avid card player and loved to solve crossword puzzles. He and Marge enjoyed watching and feeding the many different kinds of birds that frequented their backyard.

Don’s life is lovingly remembered and cherished by his family, which includes children: Brian (Karen) Johnson of Albert City; Gail Johnson of Albert City; and Tom (Terry) Johnson of Pella; grandchildren: Jeff (Sarah) Johnson, Joe (Angie) Johnson, Jennifer (Trey) Karlen, Alison (Jeff) Emery, Lexanne (Mark) Clapp, Kyle (Cristina) Johnson, Michelle (Matt) Lower, and Susan (Michael) Dickinson; great-grandchildren: Kaylee, Kassie, Dorrian, Damian and Devon Johnson; Micah, Eli and David Johnson; and Victoria and Mitchell Emery; many nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Marjorie; son Jeffrey in infancy; son and daughter-in-law Howard and Lisa; brothers: William, Roy and George Johnson; and sister Dorothy Laughlin.
