Defense propels Sioux Central to 29-2 win over Sibley-Ocheyedan

Sioux Central scored 21 unanswered points in the second half as the Rebels pulled away from an 8-2 halftime lead en route to a 29-2 win over Sibley-Ocheyedan last Friday at Sibley.

Sioux Central scored a touchdown in the third quarter and two in the fourth.

The Rebels finished the game with 277 yards of total offense, including 243 rushing. Gibson Olson ran the ball 28 times for 190 yards, including a 22-yard touchdown. Ethan Mills had six carries for 40 yards, including a 28-yard touchdown.

Carter Boettcher was 4 of 7 passing for 34 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Hargens.

Sioux Central’s defense produced a touchdown as Mills intercepted a pass and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown.

The Rebels forced five turnovers on defense and kept the Generals’ offense out of the end zone.

Hargens led the Rebels on defense with 15 total tackles. Dakota Deuschle had 7.5 stops and Ethan Johnson seven. Max Adams had six stops. Hargens recovered a fumble. Mills intercepted two passes and Boettcher and Trevor Ehlers each had one.

“It was a tough game through four quarters,” Sioux Central coach Brandon Goodchild said. “We had some troubles in the second quarter, but give credit to the defense. They kept them out of the end zone in some tough situations. One key to the game I think was we had four interceptions and one fumble recovery. We need to get back to work and prep for another week.”
