BVU nets personal best marks at Red Raider Open

It was a solid two days for the Buena Vista men’s outdoor track and field team at the Red Raider Open hosted by Northwestern College as the Beavers posted several high program and also personal best marks.

Greg Tystahl nearly matched his best time in the 5,000 meters as he crossed in 15:50.30 to place second overall. His time is the fifth-fastest in program history and just 0.07 seconds off his best time that sits fourth. Kyle Miller just missed out on cracking the top 10 in the 800 meters as he placed seventh.

Riley Flindt qualified for the finals of the 110 meter high hurdles and finished fourth with a time of 15.80 seconds. He later took third in the 400 meters hurdles with a time of 57.59 seconds that just missed cracking the program’s top 10 list.

The Beavers claimed several high finishes in the field events. Garrett Bates claimed the pole vault title with a height of 4.40 meters that ranks third-best in program history. Joe Fisher took fourth in the event at 3.80 meters, which ranks eighth on the all-time list.

Lane Jellison took third in the discus with a heave of 47.60 meters that moved him into fourth on the all-time outdoor list. He also took third in the hammer throw with a toss of 47.66 meters, which is seventh all-time in program history. Jellison also claimed seventh place in the shot put and sixth place in the javelin throw.

BECCA SIMPSON set a school record in the hammer throw and Qiana Roderick did the same in the steeplechase to help highlight a strong performance for the Buena Vista women.

Roderick reached the finish line in 12:02.36 to take the event and break a 15-year old school record in the process. Her time breaks the previous mark of 12:14.31 set by Paige Gruis in 2006. Simpson, meanwhile, recorded a toss of 49.76 meters in the hammer throw to shatter the previous mark of 48.71 set by Morgan Darrow in 2010.

Simpson also won the javelin throw with a toss of 39.70 meters, which is second-best all-time. She capped her weekend by claiming third in the shot put (12.46 meters) and moved into fourth all-time.

Christina Jackson qualified to the finals of the 100 meters and would take sixth. Katara Jondle had a lifetime-best mark in the 200 meters (26.69) and place eighth. Jadyn Forbes posted the third-fastest time in school history with her 2:21.10 clocking in the 800 while taking runner-up honors in the race.

Jessica Sump placed second in the 100 meter hurdles in 15.24, which ranks seventh on the program’s all-time list. Tabitha Guyett came in fourth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:07.63 and sits in the top 30 of the NCAA qualifying list. She also placed third in the long jump at 5.04 meters.

Madison Trimpe took fourth in the discus with a toss of 39.85 meters and moves into fourth all-time. Anna Friedrichsen finished third behind Simpson in the hammer throw with a toss of 42.19 meters and moves into fifth on the program’s all-time list.

The Beavers look to keep posting more high marks when they send select individuals to the Sioux City Relays on Friday.
