Explosions heard on gravel near C-49

Homemade explosive devices were being set off at 8:26 p.m. Saturday night on a gravel road north of C-49 on 100th Avenue.

A license plate was identified on the vehicle as the subjects fled the scene. Deputies from the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office and the Storm Lake Fire Department were called to the scene to investigate.

The homemade explosives were rendered safe at the scene and the State Fire Marshal’s Office was contacted to investigate the incident.

During the investigation the occupants of the vehicle were identified as Arturo Castro II, 18, of Ames and a 14-year-old boy from Storm Lake.

At the conclusion of the investigation police charged the 14-year-old with use of explosives or incendiary devices and criminal mischief. He was released to a family member pending a court date.

Castro was charged with use of explosives or incendiary devices, criminal mischief and interference with official acts. Castro was booked on $2,000 bond.
