Big inning hurts Storm Lake in setback to Spirit Lake

Spirit Lake scored six runs in the second inning, three in the third and five more in the fifth to hand Storm Lake a 14-0 setback in a Lakes Conference softball game on Monday at Tornado Field.

The Tornadoes were held to only four hits in the game. Naomi Castillo, Emily Johnson, Shelby Nelsen and Brenna Richter each had a single.

Madison Gaffney suffered the loss. She allowed nine hits and 14 runs, nine of which were earned, walked six and struck out none over five innings.

“Once again we have an inning where the wheels fall off and it ends up hurting us,” Storm Lake coach Mel Fisher said. “Too many errors to win ball games. Naomi Castillo continues to swing the bat well.”
