East Early Childhood Preschool held a literacy/music event on Wednesday, Sept. 6.

The nursery rhyme, “Rub a dub dub” was led by Laura Turnquist (aka as Mother Goose) and acted out by the cooks: Sue Gibbins, Rosario Rojo, Fina Velasquez and Josh Carlson.

The piano was played by Kathi Buckingham, who also led the East School cheer.

During a library visit to each classroom, the librarian got everyone hopping to the book, Read to Your Bunny by Rosemary Wells.

Two Storm Lake first grade classes, with their teachers Molly Richardson and Jessica Sly, visited their Partners in Excellence, the Storm Lake Public Library, on Friday.

Youth Services Librarian Melissa Miller gave them a tour of the library and read the children a story, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.

Later, the children helped with a “dust-in” and enjoyed eating cake.

Arett delivers May baskets in honor of grandmother

Becky Arett, granddaughter of the late Pauline Sorenson, wanted to keep her tradition alive this year by making and delivering May baskets to her grandmother’s friends.

BVU professor Dr. Kathryn McKinley of Storm Lake traveled to Cuba for 10 days in January with 17 people on a Roads Scholar trip (formerly called Elderhostel.)

“These are tours with an educational side to help you understand what you see,” she explained. “If I wanted to go to a beach, there are beaches, too.”

Kathryn flew to Miami where she met her tour people.

Maria Roland of Storm Lake enjoys her job as library page at the Storm Lake Public Library. Maria, 17, is home-schooled and is in her junior year. Her parents are Pastor James Roland, pastor of Hope Evangelical Free Church in Storm Lake; her mother is Heidi Roland. Maria has two brothers, Peter and William and one older sister, Sophia.

East Early Childhood preschool celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday with a literacy/song event on March 2.

Everyone wore crazy socks sang songs, read poems and enjoyed the Dr. Seuss book, My Many Colored Days as a  few of the activities. Many classes, staff and even the cooks dressed up. For lunch, green eggs and ham were served!

Star readers were given a King's Pointe waterpark pass for having books read to them.

Fred and Tracy Nevill of Oversize Load BBQ in Albert City have done it again. In January, the couple went to the annual Iowa awards banquet in Ames for the Iowa BBQ Society. There they won first place in the state of Iowa for their ribs as well as most improved team for barbeque in Iowa. Besides those awards, they also won third place in Iowa for their chicken, 10th in brisket, fifth in pork and fifth overall.

The annual Women in Denim conference was held Friday and Saturday, Jan. 27 and 28 at Buena Vista University. Participants could choose from a variety of sessions, including farm and personal finance, agriculture marketing, decorating, exercise and more.

The Stephen Ministry organization, “God’s people helping God’s people,” is going well in the Storm Lake area. Co-leaders Pat Cowan and Maxine Lampe, both of Storm Lake, explained the program is like “a listening ear.”
