Andrew Hoffman gave Buena Vista a quick 5-0 lead with a technical fall to begin Wednesday’s Iowa Conference dual at Nebraska Wesleyan, but it was the Prairie Wolves scoring 30 straight points en route to a 39-15 victory over the Beavers.
Following Hoffman’s victory at 184 pounds, NWU recorded three straight pins and picked up consecutive forfeits to take a 30-5 lead. Nathan Lamas rolled to an early second period fall at 149 pounds as Brad Kerkhoff also chalked up bonus points with a 16-4 major decision.

Community Education’s men’s adult volleyball league will be played every Wednesday night with the first matches of the season starting March 7. Matches will start at 8 p.m. and will be played until 10 p.m. (depending on the number of teams that sign up). Five players per team, but can play with as little as three players. Registration is $85 per team. After Feb. 23, the registration fee will increase to $100 per team. No team will be accepted after Feb. 26. Milton Duarte, Bradley Brown, Christopher Shima and Kole Wiegert all posted 5-0 records to highlight Storm Lake’s performance in the Sioux City East Duals last Saturday.
The Tornadoes were defeated by Jackson County Central (Minn.) 40-30. Duarte was a winner by pin in 3:33 at 113 pounds. Shima won by decision 4-2 at 132 and Wiegert stuck his opponent in 5:57 at 152.
Edgar Nunez won by decision 4-2 at 170. Brown (126) and Jorge Sandoval (285) each won by forfeit.

Indians win, 62-50
Spirit Lake scored the final four points of the first half to pull away from an eight-point lead and extended its lead to as much as 16 in the third quarter as the Indians went on to beat Storm Lake 62-50 in a Lakes Conference game last Thursday at Spirit Lake.
The game was tied at 6-6 when Spirit Lake went on a 10-4 run to take a 16-10 lead after the opening quarter.

Will Hurd scored 19 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked seven shots, but it wasn’t enough as South Central Calhoun beat Storm Lake St. Mary’s 79-69 in a Twin Lakes Conference game last Friday at St. Mary’s.
The Panthers held a 22-16 lead after the first quarter, but trailed 45-41 at halftime. It was 53-51 Titans heading into the fourth period.
Jake Heitman tallied 13 points for St. Mary’s. Tanner Snyder added 12 and Chakouthchok Malou 10.
Dawson Miller charted nine points, Alex Merten three, Gabe Elsden two and Cale Murray one.

Down Central, 93-80
Buena Vista overcame a bit of a shaky start, but eventually settled in nicely over the final 20 minutes as the Beavers cruised to a 93-80 victory over visiting Central College last Saturday.
David Jeffries scored 14 second-half points to lead six Beavers in double figures with 22 points. He was 8-of-11 from the field and 4-of-6 at the free throw line.

Morgan Muhlbauer scored 22 points, Jasmine Demers had 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Claudia Larsen registered a triple-double as Buena Vista used a big fourth quarter to get past visiting Central College 91-76 last Saturday.
Central led 19-16 after the first quarter with the Beavers using a late second-quarter spurt to grab a 37-35 halftime advantage. The Dutch went 11-of-17 from the field in the third quarter while BVU was 8-of-16 as the visitors led 63-58 heading to the final period.

Newell-Fonda opened the second half with an 11-0 run after being down 14 at halftime, and the Mustangs seized the momentum and went on to avenge an earlier season loss to Pocahontas Area with a 59-53 last Friday at Newell.
Pocahontas Area jumped out to a 23-11 lead after the first quarter and took a 32-18 lead into halftime. Newell-Fonda, however, stormed back and tied the game at 33-33 in the third quarter. They trailed 40-33 after three periods before closing the game with a 26-13 surge.

Hunter Decker poured in 21 points and Sioux Central outscored West Bend-Mallard 20-4 in the first quarter as the Rebels went on to defeat the Wolverines 63-44 in a Twin Lakes Conference game last Friday at Sioux Rapids.
Sioux Central held a 31-16 lead at halftime. It was 45-35 Rebels after three quarters.
Prestan Samson contributed 14 points for Sioux Central. Jake Hanson added nine and Chase Jessen eight. Blake Cavanaugh, Logan Grote and Ben Hargens all had three points. Zach Lundquist added two.
