The road to the boys state basketball tournament begins for area prep teams with district games on Monday.
In Class 1A, Storm Lake St. Mary’s (3-17) will play host to Clay Central-Everly (2-19) in a first round game at 7 p.m. on Monday. The winner plays South O’Brien (15-5).
Newell-Fonda (14-6) will face Twin Lakes Conference opponent West Bend-Mallard (4-15) next Thursday at 8 p.m. in Newell.
Ridge View (5-14) will play conference foe Woodbury Central (10-10) next Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in Kingsley.

Tornadoes win, 56-41
Storm Lake outscored Estherville Lincoln Central 16-7 in the fourth quarter as the Tornadoes completed the season sweep with a 56-41 win on Tuesday at Estherville.
Estherville jumped out to a 9-4 lead to start the game before Storm Lake tied the game at 14-14 after one quarter. The Tornadoes took the lead for good midway through the second quarter and led 29-21 at halftime.

Mustangs win, 75-73
Bryce Coppock made a jumper from the top of the key at the buzzer, capping a 29-point performance to give Newell-Fonda a 75-73 win over Sioux Central on Tuesday at Newell.
Newell Fonda led most of the first half. Aden Mahler made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Mustangs a 17-12 lead after the first quarter. Newell-Fonda led by as many as seven during the second quarter, but the Rebels took their first lead late in the half and led 36-33 at the halftime break.

Warriors win, 71-49
Carson Kruger scored 20 points and added three steals and two assists to help Alta-Aurelia beat OA-BCIG 71-49 in a nonconference game on Monday at Ida Grove.
The Warriors, now 15-4, led 18-14 after the first quarter before extending their lead to 34-23 by halftime. It was 60-40 heading into the fourth quarter.

It’s a good thing Sioux Central had a big enough lead.
The Rebels were outscored by HMS 23-11 in the fourth quarter, but still managed to hang on for a 56-52 win in a nonconference game on Monday at Hartley.
Sioux Central held an 18-6 lead after the first quarter. It was 30-19 at halftime and 45-29 heading into the fourth quarter.
Trace Blomberg led Sioux Central (11-8) with 13 points. Jake Hanson and Prestan Samson each added 10, while Hunter Decker and Chase Jessen had eight apiece for the winners.

Olivia Larsen scored 19 points, including 15 in the third quarter to highlight a 28-8 spurt as fourth-ranked Newell-Fonda finished the regular season unbeaten at 21-0 after a 79-45 win over Sioux Central on Tuesday at Newell.
The Mustangs held a 16-12 lead after the first quarter. It was 37-23 at halftime and 65-31 heading into the fourth quarter of play.
Megan Morenz scored 13 points for Newell-Fonda. Jenna Coppock added 12 and Ella Larsen nine.

Beth Pickhinke led all scorers with 24 points to help Ridge View down Storm Lake St. Mary’s 65-32 in a nonconference game on Monday at St. Mary’s.
St. Mary’s took its only lead at 8-7 during the first quarter. After that, the Raptors went on a 17-0 run to go up 24-8 and eventually took a 38-20 lead at the half.
The Panthers were held to just three points in the third quarter as Ridge View enjoyed a 53-23 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Facing a 19-point deficit midway through the second half, Buena Vista cut the deficit all the way down to three with just over 2 minutes to play, but the University of Dubuque closed the game on a 10-5 run to pull out a 92-84 victory over the Beavers on Wednesday at Siebens Fieldhouse.

A-A sends Gaes, DeRoos through sectionals
Nick Gaes captured an individual title and Alex DeRoos was a runner-up as both wrestlers advanced to the district tournament after a Class 1A sectional meet last Saturday at Emmetsburg.
Gaes won the title at 220 pounds and DeRoos finished second at 170.

In Class 1A, Storm Lake St. Mary’s (3-17) will open regional play by hosting Clay Central-Everly (5-15).
Newell-Fonda (20-0) drew a first-round bye and will play the winner of a game between Ar-We-Va (7-9) and Paton-Churdan (7-10) next Tuesday in Newell.
