That’s one of Storm Lake’s New Year’s Resolutions after going through a year in which The City Beautiful soaked in ten inches of rain and handled 45 million gallons of water through the sewer system.
“We’re setting all kinds of new records,” City Clerk Justin Yarosevich said back in May.

A Norwalk couple with local roots is in the limelight for having the first baby of 2014 in central Iowa. Nash David Eddie was born at 12:17 a.m., Jan. 1 via cesarean section at Iowa Methodist Medical Center.
The five-pound, three-ounce bundle of joy is the son of Lance (SLHS class of 2005) and Christine Eddie.

Contingent builds Lutheran Hour float for big parade
Schaller’s Nancy Ploeger, Lynn Wunschel and Darwyn and Sharri Hansen wanted to ring in 2014 by doing something special … celebrating the start of a new year by “pushing petals” in preparation for the New Year’s Day Tournament of Roses Parade.

Dan Andrews faced -10º with a smile Thursday morning. Jan. 2 was his last day on the job with the U.S. Postal Service.
This veteran carrier has put in one month shy of 29 years, starting in Fonda and later moving to Storm Lake. Andrews, 63, has successfully avoided biting dogs except for “just one time,” he said, but there have been a lot of close calls.

The big fish aren’t getting away this winter at Black Hawk Lake, because there aren’t any big fish to get away.
Not yet anyway.
All fish in Black Hawk Lake died as the Iowa Department of Natural Resources started a $238,000 renovation project on the lake 13 months ago, the largest renovation effort in 30 years.

Loaded handgun found by police in Galva teen’s car
At 3:25 p.m. Monday police were called to Walmart after a report of a reckless driver.
An officer observed the suspect vehicle traveling south on Lake Avenue and stopped the vehicle near the intersection of Lake Avenue and Eighth Street.

City Clerk Justin Yarosevich said the City of Storm Lake has a few things on its 2014 wish list that it is hoping to either complete fully or start so it can be finished by 2015.

Paul Merten was named chairman of the Buena Vista County Supervisors during the supervisors’ first meeting of 2014 Thursday morning.
Don Altena was named vice chairman.

A Peterson man was charged Tuesday with domestic abuse assault after a woman reported injuries at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center early that morning.
Tommy Hartfield, 41, was arrested at his Peterson residence by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office at 11:30 a.m. He was held at the Clay County Jail in Spencer.
